National Park of Wasur represents Papua on the largest of wet land, which established since March 24, 1990 as a National Park. The area is untouchable by human activities. It is located on the southern coast of Papua, to the east of the Merauke city and on to the borderline between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. The area was designed measures 413,810 hectares.
It is the first National Park in Indonesia which incorporates existing about 11 villages, and encourages the residents to take part in managing the park and the natural resources. Officially prepared and developed by both the Forestry Department and the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) Wasur National Park Project.
Approximately, 70 percent of the National Park comprises lowland swampy forest, and swampy savanna. Following the seasons change bring the weather condition changed by remarkably. The swampy area dries up completely in the dry season. During the wet season, the water starts filling the area, and flooding a lot of other low-lying areas as well. It has the similarity ecosystem with the Kakandu National Park, Northern Territory of Australia.
The forest dominated with the plants, consist of api-api (Avicennia sp.), tancang (Bruguiera sp.), ketapang (Terminalia sp.), and kayu putih (Melaleuca sp.). The type of fauna exist on that land are kangaroo pohon (Dendrolagus spadix), kesturi raja (Psittrichus fulgidus), kasuari gelambir (Casuarius casuarius sclateri), bird of crowned pigeon or dara mahkota/mambruk (Goura cristata), cendrawasih kuning besar (Paradisea apoda novaeguineae), cendrawasih raja (Cicinnurus regius rex), cendrawasih merah (Paradisea rubra), buaya air tawar (Crocodylus novaeguineae), and buaya air asin (Crocodylus porosus).
The blessed of diversity nature for flora and fauna in Wasur is remarkable, that’s why this place known well as “Serengeti Papua”. This land brings benefits for productivity on food supply and supports habitat protection of fishes, shrimp, and crab. They are giving high value on economic side in the area.
Many fowls as migrated birds come and stay at Rawa Biru Lake, they are Wallaby and Kasuari. It made Rawa Biru Lake called as “Tanah Air” or “Water Land/Field”, herding of fowls’ inhabitant the field there colorfully. This location is suitable for photography activities or an observation study with the incredible attractions from the fauna there.

How to get there:
It takes 1,5 hours by plane from Jayapura (the capital province of Papua) to Merauke. Then, go to the location by car or rent car through “Trans Irian” (Jayapura-Merauke).
